Happy Monday Everyone!
What is the ultimate deciding factor that prevents us from reaching our goals? Is it procrastination? Our friends and family? Money? All of these can be directed back to one thing:
FEAR
.
We don't procrastinate because we're lazy, we procrastinate because we're
afraid
of the change that might arise if we do the work that's required.
We don't go after our goals because we're
afraid
of what our friends and family might think if we accomplish them.
And we don't have money because subconsciously we're
afraid
of what money will turn us into, as well as the fear of losing what we've worked so hard to gain.
How can we overcome this? I believe the best strategy you can adopt to master your fears is
acceptance
.
In Dale Carnegies book
How To Stop Worrying And Start Living
, he talks about how acceptance is the "magic formula" for overcoming fear and worry.
"When you accept the worst you have nothing more to lose. Which automatically means you have everything to gain!"
Acceptance can be broken up into 3 steps. First, you need to honestly ask yourself "what is the worst that can possibly happen?" Don't exaggerate the outcome and genuinely clarify a realistic event. Once you've acknowledge the worst possible outcome, the second step is to accept it. Then finally, calmly proceed to improve upon the worst. So let's say you're afraid of what your friends and family will think. What's the worst that can happen? They'll laugh? Criticize you? Make fun of you? Realize that these outcomes don't result in death or your inability to succeed in life. Therefore, accept the worst by understanding that unjust criticism is often a disguised compliment and proceed to improve upon the worst. And a lot of times, that outcome will never come to see the light of day. Our mind is powerful and tends to think about the worst in an effort to prepare us, when all it does is consume us to the point of paralyzation. Remember this acronym:F - FalseE - EvidenceA - AppearingR - RealSo understand that fear is merely a fabrication of what we believe is going to happen. Don't let a lie stop you from living a life that is true to exist. And if your fears still have a tight grasp on your conscious, than learn to accept the worst so you can move forward with the mindset that you now have everything to gain.
Until next time,
