3-Minute Mastery: Do You Need To Go To College?—Here's Why I Did

Issue No. 74 | May 27th, 2024

I never liked the idea of going to college.

I just couldn’t get on board with the concept of spending time and money to get a piece of paper that might or might not land you a job.

And apparently, I’m not the only one who thinks this because over 62% of Americans don’t even have a college degree.

Not to mention some of the most successful people I know never bothered to get one.

But who am I to talk? I’m sitting here writing this while I’m looking at my Associates Degree from Northwest Florida State College.

Do me a favor and look up hypocrite in the dictionary. I’m confident my face will be the definition.

But before you do, let me explain.

Long story short, I was getting paid to go.

Nothing that would make me rich, but enough to incentivize me to go. During my freshman year I was making around a couple thousand dollars per semester after my tuition was paid for.

Trust me. If I had to pay entirely out of pocket to go to college, I wouldn’t have gone.

And to be frank, I began to like the idea of going to college. Not necessarily because I wanted a piece of paper with my name on it, but because I love learning.

Once I saw there was classes in philosophy, ethics, writing, and public speaking, it was game over.

So I went.

Two years later, here I am calling it quits.

Because for starters, I’ll have to start paying my tuition out of pocket, and it just no longer makes sense as it doesn’t align with what I want to do.

But the point of today’s newsletter isn’t to talk about why I’m not going. It’s to talk about whether or not you should go.

The short answer is it depends.

If you have the capability to get some scholarships and have your tuition paid for, and it’s something you’d genuinely like to experience, I’d say go for it.

But if you’re thinking about going just because your parents are pushing for it or because you think you’ll fit in more into society, I’d say take another route.

4+ years of college is a long time to be living it for someone else.

And so because of that, I’m not going back.

Don’t get me wrong, it was a fun two years. But if you’re at a point in your life where you’re ready to make a change, don’t leave it up to a bunch of professors and a piece of paper.

Get out there and make it happen for yourself.

But if you truly feel the need to go, then more power to you. I understand college gets a lot of hate, but it’s typically from those who never even went in the first place.

So take it from someone who has.

Until next time,
Isaiah Taylor

P.S. Don’t forget look up hypocrite.
