3-Minute Mastery: Jordan Peterson's Secret To A Healthy Lifestyle
Issue No. 73 | May 20th, 2024
I think it’s safe to say everyone knows who Jordan Peterson is.
But just in case you’ve been living under a rock since 2016, Peterson is a Canadian psychologist who taught at the University of Toronto where he taught a class in psychology for 23 years.
Over the last few years, he’s written multiple best-selling books and has received widespread attention because of his cultural and political views.
And it was in 2017 when Peterson started to upload his lectures onto YouTube to share them with the world.
The majority of them are still available to watch for free today.
But there’s one in particular that caught my eye.
In his lecture, he started by offering a strategy, a type of lifestyle that’s needed to have a successful mindset.
It seems simple, but he’s a huge advocate for having a daily routine.
It’s a long lecture so I’ll just include a snippet of it to give you a general idea:
No one can live without a routine. You just forget that. If you guys don’t have a routine, I would recommend you get one going.
Because you cannot be mentally healthy without a routine. You need to pick a time to get up, whatever time you want, but pick one and stick to it.
Because otherwise you dysregulate your circadian rhythms, and they regulate your mood.
And the reason why it stuck with me was because it’s different than what a lot of self-help gurus recommend.
They always talk about how you need to take cold showers or meditate for an hour every day to live a healthy life.
When in all actuality, it’s about finding a lifestyle that works for you.
In other words, a routine.
It just sucks because we’ve become so caught up in looking at other people’s daily habits that we forget to make our own.
So as Jordan Peterson said, having a healthy routine starts with choosing a time to get up every day and sticking with it.
Choose what time you’re going to read and stick with it.
Choose what time you’re going to sleep and stick with it.
Having a solid routine is the key to having better discipline. Because whenever you don’t feel motivated to do something, your routine will kick in and spark your self-discipline to get up and do the work.
And I realize some people might think having a routine restricts your life, when I’d have to say it does the opposite.
If anything, a routine ensures you do everything on time which enables you to have more freedom to do the things you want to do.
Just make sure you do what works for you.
Even if that means taking a cold shower at 5AM.
Until next time,
Isaiah Taylor
