3-Minute Mastery: Wouldn't It Be A Shame?
Issue No. 132 | July 7th, 2025
In the 1984 Olympics, a woman named Gabriela Andersen-Schiess was there to compete as a marathon runner in Los Angeles. Coincidently, this was the first-ever women’s marathon held by the Olympics, and, it was one of the hottest recorded days of the year.
During the race, Gabriela had ran past her water stop and was about 400 meters way from the finish line when her body started to give out.
With one lap to go, her legs started to stiffen up and one arm began to hang limp by her side. She was staggering and barely even walking. Olympic medical staff knew she needed attention, so they started rushing towards her in the middle of the event.
But Gabriela knew the rules. If they touched her, she’d be disqualified. So, she waved them off and refused their help. And for five long minutes, she dragged herself forward step by step until she finally crossed the finish line.
She didn’t get first place.
She didn’t win a medal.
What was important to her is that she finished. Not that she won.
This is a great story for those who need that final push. To realize that you have it in you to cross the finish line. You might not get the reward you’re hoping for, but sometimes the act of finishing is better than the prize.
There’s a quote out of a speech I listen to a lot, and it reminds me a little bit of this story:
“Wouldn’t it be a shame for you to quit when you’re this close?
Wouldn’t it be a shame for you to walk away when you’ve come this far?
Wouldn’t it be horrible for you to bail out when you’re just this close to victory?
You can’t walk by what you see. You can’t give up because it doesn’t feel good.
You can’t let people talk you out of it.
You can’t let your emotions stop you from moving forward.”
It’s a constant reminder that most people don’t fail at the starting line. They give up 400 meters from the finish.
So maybe today hurts. Maybe you’re moving at a slower pace than you had envisioned.
But wouldn’t it be a shame to stop now? You’re much closer than you think.
Finish strong,
Isaiah Taylor
