3-Minute Mastery: Why We Complicate Our Healing And An Excerpt From My Upcoming Book

One of the few things I stand by when it comes to mental health is that we as humans tend to overcomplicate our well-being.
Especially when it comes to overthinking.
We read books, take courses, and seek reassurance in others despite the cure being within us all along. And it starts by realizing the answers are right in front of you.
A good example of this comes from an old English parable about a frog and a centipede.
There was once a frog that asked a centipede how it managed to walk with so many legs without tripping. But until now, the centipede had never really given it that much thought. But once he tried to analyze which leg went where, it immediately got tangled and couldn’t move.
The centipede continuing thinking about where to step and what leg to move when all he had to do was simply walk. That by overthinking and complicating something so simple, he only made his life harder.
But I’m not going to sit here and act like I don’t do this myself. Frankly, I’m just as guilty.
When I first started trying to understand why I overthought everything, I went looking for complicated answers—the kind that made me feel like I was doing something important. I figured the harder it was, the more it had to be true.
But the truth isn’t always found in chaos. Most of the time, it’s sitting quietly in the things we overlook because they don’t look impressive enough to grab our attention.
We love to complicate our healing. We chase twenty-step routines and deep theories when, half the time, what we really need is to pause, breathe, and be honest with ourselves. Sometimes the thing that feels too small to matter is exactly what changes everything. As Mark Goulston says in his book Get Out Of Your Own Way…
“Sometimes the easy way out is the right way in.”
So don’t think that everything worthwhile requires effort. Especially when it comes to your own mental health. You don’t need an app, a program, or a week in the mountains. You just need to believe you’re already enough, and simply, walk forward.
