3-Minute Mastery: The 100 Year Koi Fish
Issue No. 185 | July 20th, 2026
If you were to ask a hundred different people what is the determining factor behind success, you might get some answers like:
“Never giving up.”
“Waking up early.”
“Working late.”
“Making sacrifices.”
As important as they all are, I’ve come to realize success—at least my own definition of it—is defined by patience.
You can be as disciplined as possible, wake up early and go to sleep late every night, but if you aren’t willing to do it for the long run, you won’t see the results.
And you’ve heard it firsthand. We’ve talked about people like Sara Blakely, Colonel Sanders, Sylvester Stallone, Steven Pressfield, and countless others who took years of doing the same thing every day in order to get the success we know and love them by.
And the idea of having patience is a shared idea around the world. There’s a Japanese legend that in the Yellow River, a koi fish will swim upstream for 100 years, and once it does, it will transform into a dragon. Despite most fish giving up or settling for downstream, the koi fish is patient and diligent over 100 years.
That’s why koi fish symbolize perseverance. The core concept of patience. It’s the common denominator to winning in every case you see.
It comes down to, are you willing to be patient? That’s where most people get tripped up because we live in a world where everyone wants success right now that they don’t realize that mentality is the very thing destroying their opportunity to break past the finish line.
So take your time, persevere, and be patient.
Until next time,
Isaiah Taylor
