3-Minute Mastery: Studio Ghibli And The Making Of Your Own Path
Issue No. 148 | October 27th, 2025
When I look around, I see people trying to follow the conventional path. The path of least-resistance, the path that everyone else is on because it’s not just easier, it feels right.
But sometimes, the right path for you isn’t the one that’s been traversed by millions of other people. Maybe, it’s a journey that involves you doing something completely different. Living the type of life that doesn’t conform to other people’s standards, but rather, creates your own.
At least that’s how Hayao Miyazaki lived.
If you’re not familiar with him, Miyazaki co-founded Studio Ghibli in 1985. An animation studio that’s released films like Spirited Away, Castle In The Sky, and Kiki’s Delivery Service to name a few.
But in the beginning, Japan’s animation industry was driven by commercial trends. Everyone was using bright colors, fast pacing, and designing characters made to sell toys. Miyazaki wanted none of that.
He wanted to tell stories. Ones that make you feel something instead of simply react. So he broke the unspoken rule of filmmaking and went down his own path that felt right to him.
And by doing that, he was a part of something that would go on to be worth 25 billion yen and touch the hearts of millions.
To this day, Studio Ghibli still makes movies that aren’t built for attention; they’re built for wonder.
Just like Miyazaki, we need to start ignoring the trends and do what feels right to you. To do something on your own accord without giving into the criticism or hate.
So don’t revolve your life around what other people do or expect of you, live it based around sincerity.
As Ralph Waldo Emerson said,
“Don’t go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path, and leave a trail.”
