Early on in my life, I hit a sort of, roadblock.

I realized I genuinely had no idea what I was going to do with my life.

And so I did what any other overthinking, helpless, research-focused person would do.

Read books on how to find your purpose.

As you might know by now, no book is going to tell you exactly what to do with your life. And in all honesty, it took quite a few books for me to figure that out.

But I did find one book that helped clear some things up for me.

It’s by John C. Maxwell, the author of the very first self-help book I ever read. This book in particular is “Put Your Dream To The Test.”

Of course when I first picked it up, I said, “I don’t even have a dream to test, let alone an idea.”

So it just sat there on my bookshelf for probably over a year until I finally decided to read the first chapter and just see if it spoke to me.

Right away, Maxwell talks about the biggest factor when it comes to finding/living your dream. And it all comes down to ownership.

In other words, is it really your dream?

Whatever it is that you want to do—or think you want to do—take every outside factor out of it. Your parents, friends, pets, society, money, just look at the job/career itself and ask yourself if this is what you want.

Because life is too short living according to other peoples expectations. We only live once, and our dream, career, job, whatever you want to call it, takes up the majority of it.

It doesn’t matter if other people don’t believe in it. You have to have the courage to believe in your vision even when others don’t see it.

And if you’ve been living your life with other people in mind, that’s not a bad thing, but maybe it’s a sign to ask yourself what do you want for a change?

A dream isn’t a shared idea. So don’t live a life sharing it with others who don’t understand you. Live one worth remembering.
